July is here—and while the streaming platforms are clearly obsessed with Shark Week (hard pass from me), I’ve rounded up the horror releases that are actually worth your time this month.
Let’s get into it.
🔪 Shudder
- Hell Motel – New episodes every Tuesday
I’m keeping up with this series weekly. If you haven’t started it yet, now’s a good time to binge.
🦈 Note: Shudder is going hard on shark horror this month. I skip Shark Week every year—just not my thing. So you won’t find those titles here.
HBO Max
Sinners – Premieres July 4
This film is so good! It’s visually stunning and tense from start to finish. I watched it with friends on Discord, and despite some tech hiccups, it still blew me away. Worth a rewatch for sure.
Death of a Unicorn
“A weekend retreat turns deadly when a father and daughter accidentally hit a unicorn, attracting the interest of a billionaire who wants to exploit its healing powers.”
Jenna Ortega? Paul Rudd? Weird plot + A24? I’m in. While A24 and I have a love/hate thing (I only liked Green Room), this sounds absurd in the best way. Fingers crossed it doesn’t lean into the usual A24 weird-for-the-sake-of-it.
Opus
“A young writer visits the secluded home of a reclusive pop star who vanished 30 years ago—and finds herself caught in his dark agenda.”
Total surprise find while looking up Unicorn—but the cast is stacked: Juliette Lewis and John Malkovich? Yes please. I’m keeping my expectations open.
Netflix
Ziam
“In a world succumbing to hunger, a Muay Thai fighter must fight off zombies to protect the one he loves.”
Zombies and martial arts? That’s an automatic yes. Let’s go.
⚠️ Sorry for the short list—most platforms are laser-focused on shark content, and that’s a genre I don’t vibe with. If you’re into aquatic horror, this might be your month… but not mine.
🍿 In Theaters
I Know What You Did Last Summer – July 18
I watched the original and once was enough. Total nostalgia bait. If you’re a fan of the franchise, you’ll probably enjoy it. I’ll wait it out.
Skill house – July 10
“A dark satire of influencer culture and the terrifying things new celebs will do for clout.”
These Gen Z horror stories crack me up. The scariest thing for them is no Wi-Fi or not being able to post? LOL. But hey, these films are often smarter than they seem—so I’m curious.
House of Eden – July 25 (Limited Release)
“Three paranormal investigators face a sinister entity deep in the woods during their latest ghost hunt.”
Found footage + a YouTube personality (Celina Spooky Boo) = definitely a home release watch for me. I love lo-fi horror when it’s done right.
Together – July 30
“A couple’s move to the countryside takes a gruesome turn after a disturbing encounter with an unnatural force.”
Sounds like body horror—think Contracted vibes. Those films can be a tough watch for me, but I’ll give it a go once it hits streaming.
Game Release
Luto – Releases July 22
“A psychological horror where every failed escape attempt takes you deeper into a surreal nightmare.”
I played the demo on PC and it was fantastic. Super atmospheric, creepy in the best way, and I wasn’t sure it would ever actually launch—glad to see it releasing this month!
👻 Final Thoughts
That’s it for July! A light month for streaming (unless you love sharks), but some really strong entries in both games and theaters.
